The importance of sleeping well

Aside from just being a really great thing to do, sleep plays so many critical roles in our life that we don’t often even consider. It helps to replenish everything from our nervous system to the blood that flows through our bodies. Detailed scientific studies have highlighted the importance of good sleep, and how a lack of it can cause a host of different problems both in the short and the long term.

Sleep issues in general seem to be a more recent phenomenon. Ancient man rose and slept with the movements of the sun, and these so-called “circadian rhythms” are a very deep part of who we all are as humans. However, the digital age has thrown a spanner in the works, and the light from our many different screens plays havoc with our daily sleep patterns.

And yet, this modern problem seems like it could be fixed with one of the oldest ways to fall asleep. Something that first began centuries ago. Something that we’re all familiar with and that we’ve all likely enjoyed at some point or another in our youth. We are talking, of course, about the bedtime tale.

A Brief History of the Bedtime Story

The bedtime tale is a tradition as old as time. We all have fond memories of being lulled to sleep by the soothing voices of our parents or grandparents, as they tell us fascinating stories, full of bright and vivid imagery. So many times, we have drifted off to sleep, our heads filled with wondrous colour and adventure.

But who’s to say these tales can’t be a part of our lives beyond childhood? For one, we all still rely on different tools and techniques to help us fall asleep at night. To add to that, we’re living in an age where numerous adults around the world periodically struggle to get enough sleep. If you’ll permit us to get a bit more technical, there’s plenty of research that highlights just how critical sleep can be for our bodies to function well, and its importance for our overall physical and mental well-being.

However, all that aside, it’s really as simple as this – you’re never too old for a great bedtime story.

Which is why, our latest labour of love combines that wonderful childhood tradition with the power of modern meditation for good sleep, to give you – Mindhouse Sleep Stories!

New ways to fall asleep: What are Sleep Stories?

To put it briefly, our Sleep Stories are a blend of wonderfully-crafted creative writing and peaceful ambient music to fall asleep to, anchored by some fantastic narrations by a few of our favourite folks in entertainment. In short, the perfect bedtime stories for adults to fall asleep to! We’re convinced that the very best Sleep Stories need the right voices, and we were thrilled to be able to collaborate with Rahul Bose, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Amol Parashar to help bring the first set of stories to life. Needless to say, being able to work with them was an absolute treat.

We’ve worked with our writers to ensure that each story evokes a sense of calm and tranquility, with the themes spanning everything from folk tales with an updated twist, to nature visualizations and original fiction. Transport yourself to the pristine glacial beauty of the alps with “A Swiss Mountain Adventure”, guided by Konkona Sen Sharma’s expert narration. Take a walk through the cool dark trees with “A Night in the Forest”, with Rahul Bose’s soothing baritone as the perfect nocturnal companion. Or immerse yourself in a vibrant and colourful reimagining of Hansel & Gretel, retold compellingly by Amol Parashar. No matter what your bedtime tale of choice, we feel there’s something for everyone (and there’ll be more on the way soon)!

Sleep Stories as meditation for good sleep

Aside from being one of the perfect ways to fall asleep, as you gently drift off to dreamland each night, we feel that the best Sleep Stories can also act as handy entry points into the world of meditation – which ours very much do! Various elements of the Visualization technique have been woven seamlessly into the content of each story, and when you listen to one of them, you’re also gaining a certain amount of familiarity with the technique itself.

Our writers worked hard to ensure that every single detail is conveyed with the utmost care. This helps you paint a vivid mental image of what’s happening in the story, and allows the narration to transport you to the scene in your mind, making it a more immersive experience.

So after you’ve listened to a couple, you’ll be all set to try and attend a full guided session, and kickstart a more regular meditation practice.

It’s also always a good idea to use music to fall asleep to, and the soothing background scores we’ve included in each Sleep Story fulfill this purpose very well. Different stories include soothing melodic soundscapes or even just gentle sounds from nature, depending on the theme of the story, to help set the mood perfectly for the listening experience.
