What to expect in your first session

The first therapy session differs from follow-up sessions as it is mainly to help the client and the therapist to get to know each other and determine how to proceed. During the first session, it's important to establish a level of trust and comfort. This helps the client be at ease and open up about discussing personal issues. It involves questions on background information, symptoms, what may have prompted them to seek therapy, things that they may feel are wrong with their life, personal history, including childhood, education, relationships with friends and family, living situation, and career. An overview of the therapy process and what they can expect in future sessions may be provided. It's normal for an individual to feel nervous or anxious during the first session, but the aim is to create a safe space for them to work through any challenges.
